Mayor Island (Tuhua) is located 35km offshore north of Tauranga. The Island is the visible part of an ancient undersea volcano and rises to 355 metres above seal level with a land area of 13km2.
In 1993 a marine reserve was established at the northern end of the island with restricted fishing to the surrounding shores to protect marine organisms and their habitats. There is now over 60 species of reef fish including subtropical fish found in the reserve.
Beyond the reserve the marine waters offer fantastic fishing.
